00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:02.319
This is a renewed original recording.
00:00:02.640 --> 00:00:10.240
Hello and welcome to Believe in People Extra, the companion miniseries to our award-winning podcast about all things addiction, recovery, and stigma.
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:17.920
I'm Robbie Lawson, the show's producer, and each week I'll bring you highlights, exclusive recordings, extended cuts, and powerful moments from our back.
00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:26.800
This series brings together the most impactful conversations and recovery-focused insights, condensed into short episodes to support and inspire those on their journey.
00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:30.719
In this clip, Amy Joe Johnson talks about why she chose to stop drinking.
00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:35.840
Not because she hit the bottom, but because alcohol was making her anxiety louder and life feel harder.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:38.640
She shares the simple mindset shift that helped the most.
00:00:38.880 --> 00:00:42.560
Instead of saying never again, she reminded herself that she could drink.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:43.759
She just didn't want to.
00:00:44.079 --> 00:00:50.240
Amy Joe also reflects on how not drinking changed her friendships and why having support at home made it easier to stop.
00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:51.200
Sober.
00:00:51.359 --> 00:00:52.799
I don't know, that's such a heavy-loaded word.
00:00:53.119 --> 00:00:54.159
It's quite a loaded word for pictures.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:01:00.079
Yeah, for me, I it's been two years since I since I decided I don't want to drink anymore, and it's my choice.
00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:03.840
And at any point, I could change my mind if I wanted to.
00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:05.680
And I think that's helpful for me.
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:06.159
Yes.
00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:08.480
Because I have no desire.
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:13.439
And it sort of gives me the control, I feel, as well.
00:01:13.680 --> 00:01:15.599
And it has been almost two years.
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.239
May 23rd is the day that I was like, I'm done.
00:01:21.280 --> 00:01:34.560
And I feel like within those two years, the confidence within even talking about that is now really because because I'm so comfortable with not drinking now.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:43.040
It's such a part of my life now that I I I I I have yeah, I guess I just have more confidence around that.
00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:52.400
Like the first year it was like, I don't want to talk about it because I don't want to disappoint maybe myself or somebody else, or but now I I have absolutely no interest.
00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:58.799
It's good to say that about the label though, because I I I too find that if when I attach a label to something, it becomes really hard to do.
00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:05.120
Here in the UK, we have a annual campaign called Dry January where people give up alcohol for a month.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:14.240
I probably do that subconsciously a lot, but if I say to myself, I'm gonna do dry January, all I will want is to, I'll probably get cravings to have an alcoholic drink.
00:02:14.319 --> 00:02:14.479
Yeah.
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:18.560
So that the label of it of saying I'm doing this or I'm committing to this, I find that quite hard.
00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:22.800
So it's nice that you have that the flippancy that you could, you know.
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:26.960
Yeah, so that was advice given to me from a mentor of mine.
00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:28.240
His name is Robert.
00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:34.639
But when I first decided to quit two years ago, I was really struggling for the first maybe three weeks.
00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:43.919
And I actually called him and I was just like not that I wanted a drink, but it was just like almost like a mind fuck happening for me.
00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:46.560
And I called him and I'm like, I'm driving myself crazy.
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:47.840
He goes, Well, what is it?
00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:54.000
And I was like, I just I, you know, I say I'm not gonna drink anymore, but it's like it's making me crazy.
00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:56.159
And he said, then go have a drink.
00:02:56.400 --> 00:02:59.199
You're allowed to go have a drink, and I was like, but I don't want one.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:00.639
He goes, Great.
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:01.919
Yeah, yeah.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:03.759
Now now it's been spilled back on you.
00:03:04.080 --> 00:03:05.039
Yeah, I don't even want one.
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:09.759
And he's like, Yeah, so just tell yourself you can, but you just don't want one.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.159
So that works for me, and it has worked.
00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:12.879
Good.
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:17.599
At the one year mark, you decided to share a profound statement that reached hundreds of thousands, if not millions.
00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:20.080
I'm gonna read it out actually, because I've got it here.
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:24.240
It says here a year ago, I found myself struggling to stay okay.
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:28.319
I was perpetually depressed, I had anxiety, and it was scaring the shit out of me.
00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:32.080
I knew I needed to blow something up in my life, I knew I needed a drastic change.
00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:37.360
So instead of breaking up with my sweet boyfriend, I decided to leave an old friend called alcohol.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:49.199
Yeah, so that was a year after I I had decided to stop drinking, and I felt comfortable enough to talk about it on social media within that, you know.
00:03:49.360 --> 00:04:00.000
And I did that because I tell you, that whole first year I would find myself on social media searching for other people who had stopped, and I found that really inspiring.
00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:04.879
When I hear Drew Barrymore talk about it, it really inspires me.
00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:22.879
Yeah, so I've I decided to just do that because I know how much it meant to me when I would see other people that had decided to stop that weren't necessarily hit rock bottom or necessarily you know alcoholics or or whatever, you know.
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:26.879
So I just thought, why not share that?
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:28.720
Maybe it will inspire somebody.
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:29.439
Yeah, absolutely.
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:39.519
And you you've got such a you know large social media following, you have such profile and influence that people will look to you and seeing you go through that like you've said, I'm sure will help plenty of other people as well.
00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:46.399
Yeah, and you know, and the funny thing is is like hearing that back, I still struggle with anxiety.
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:48.560
I still struggle sometimes.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:51.600
I don't know if it's depression or it's more anxiety for me.
00:04:52.079 --> 00:05:18.720
I don't I don't think I'm really depressed, but it I think it's easier to sort of face all of that and find the tools to calm myself down, or without having the mind chatter of the alcohol, which to me it became really loud of like when's I wonder what I'm gonna have to drink tonight, or what am I gonna drink?
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:44.079
Like it was everything was planned around alcohol, and to eliminate that from my life has been really interesting, even to see who I grav gravitate towards as friends to who I don't know, it's I I just eliminating that entire aspect of my life has been so freeing and really I love it.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:59.279
Like I I find it very empowering to be able to go to a party and not even think about having a drink or be able to, you know, all the different I mean I used to plan a drink that went with almost every occasion, right?
00:05:59.519 --> 00:05:59.839
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:02.399
And to just not have that as a part of it.
00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:05.839
Has it impacted any of like your you you know, you said then?
00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:33.839
I often found that when I speak to people, when they give up alcohol, sometimes they might find that their friends aren't inviting them to things anymore, or they maybe struggle to attend events because they don't have the comfort of alcohol, especially people with anxiety, and you know, I've talked about social anxiety in the past and people who need a drink to go to social events, but I often find that when alcohol is removed, some people uh they found that their friendship circles change because they're no longer being invited to things, or they don't want to hang out with friends who are drinking.
00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.199
Did you experience anything like that?
00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:37.839
Or did things sort of stay the same for yourself?
00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:48.639
I I did experience that, but I you know what what I really saw was who who are my lifelong friends and my friends that I consider family.
00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:54.160
And if I have a drink or if I don't have a drink, it doesn't matter within any situation.
00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:03.519
And I realized I'm very bored quickly sitting around someone's counter with people just drinking.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:06.160
I don't find it that inspiring.
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:14.160
And you know, at first I think it was like I put it on myself like, am I boring?
00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:16.000
Do I not have enough to say?
00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:20.000
But then I realized, no, this situation is boring.
00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:22.560
It was much more fun when you was under the influence of alcohol.
00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:26.160
Now you're sober, you realize, hang on, these situations aren't as fun as I thought they were.
00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:27.680
I completely get that.
00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:43.759
I think there's some people that just like they may, they may, you know, when when I did drink a lot, not a lot, but I it was a part of my life of every like almost every day, and somebody would stop drinking.
00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:46.800
I remember thinking, like, oh, they're probably not fun anymore.
00:07:47.279 --> 00:07:47.839
Yeah, yeah, that is.
00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:48.800
I was the culprit.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:49.439
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:50.079
Well, that's what I mean.
00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:54.000
So it's it's one of the things, at least you can understand it from from another point of view then completely.
00:07:54.319 --> 00:08:02.480
But I remember sitting on my backyard with my pal Joanne, my my best drinking buddy, who's now a very good friend still.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:06.800
And I looked at her and I'm like, I like I said in that thing, I gotta blow something up.
00:08:06.959 --> 00:08:09.040
And I don't think it's Matt.
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:10.639
I think it's this.
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:13.439
And we were like, okay, all right.
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:32.159
So we just partied that day, and then it was like maybe a month later where I just I was in Cannes actually, and I it I just almost started to feel disconnected from my body, and I didn't, and I went to Cannes and I hadn't drank wine in over a year because it wasn't sitting well with me.
00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:35.759
And I decided that since I was in France, I could have rose.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:39.919
And I drank all that rose, and then I went out that night, and I drank more.
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:43.440
I drank myself to a point where I I couldn't even see straight.
00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:53.200
Laid on the beach all the next day, just so hung over, and then started to have panic panic attacks the next day, and then knew I had to fly.
00:08:53.440 --> 00:09:01.360
And then I remember saying to Matt on the phone, and I said, I think I need to stop drinking and I don't know how to do it.
00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:03.600
And he said, I'll stop too.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:04.320
Yeah.
00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:05.759
And he stopped.
00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:08.960
And I do think it would have been so much harder.
00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:13.600
And just having that eliminated made it, I think, so much easier.
00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:14.159
I don't know.
00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:17.200
If if Matt drank, I don't know if I would have been able to do it.
00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:21.840
